"I’m struggling with a canvas begun a few days before my indisposition. A reaper, the study is all yellow, terribly thickly impasted, but the subject was beautiful and simple. A vague figure struggling like a devil in the full heat of the day to reach the end of his toil. And then saw the image of death in it, in this sense that humanity would be the wheat being reaped. So if you like it’s the opposite of that sower I tried before. But in this death nothing sad, it takes place in broad daylight with a sun that floods everything with a light of fine gold."

"Estoy luchando con un cuadro que empecé unos días antes de mi recaída, un segador, el estudio es amarillo, terriblemente empastado, pero el motivo era bello y sencillo. Y entonces vi en este segador –vaga figura que lucha contra el demonio bajo el sol para terminar su trabajo–, vi en él la imagen de la muerte, es decir, que la humanidad sería el trigo que se siega. Es pues, si se quiere, la antítesis de aquel sembrador que había pintado. Pero en esta muerte no hay nada triste, todas las cosas suceden a la luz de un sol que lo inunda todo con una luz de oro fino."

"Birkaç gün önce isteksizlikle başladığım tuval için uğraşıyorum. Orak, çalışma, ürkütücü kalın sarı, bunlar peyzajı etkiliyor ama konu basit ve güzel. Belli belirsiz bir figür var, sanki çabasıyla adeta Şeytan'ın mücadelesini andırıyor. Ve sonra, tıpkı insanlığın da hasat edilen buğday gibi, ne kadar dirense de ölüme teslim olacağını gördüm. Yani, bu tohum ekenin tam tersi bir vaziyet. Bu üzücü ölüm, güneş varken ve güpegündüz ince altın sarısı bir ışığın seliyle gerçekleşir."
